A
wide range of weather data for AST@RHO will be provided by The Florida
Automated Weather Network (FAWN) which is operated by the University
of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. FAWN by provides
up-to-date weather information through a system of automated weather
stations distributed throughout the State of Florida. Overall, there
are four parts to the FAWN system: collecting data, transmitting it
to the collection site, processing the data, and redistributing it to
the end user. The data are collected at a 30
foot tower which transmits the data to IFAS. FAWN database servers
maintained by IFAS Information Technologies receive weather data from
remote stations every 15 minutes. Each FAWN site provides a variety
of weather related data including:
| Temperature (2 ft, 6 ft, 30 ft above ground) |
| Solar radiation (watts/ sq. m); an indication
of cloud cover |
| Relative Humidity (%) |
Dewpoint (deg F) |
| Wind speed: 15 min average, min/max gust |
| Wind direction; average, Std. Deviation |
| Barometric Pressure |
Rainfall since midnight |
A FAWN site will be established at RHO as part of a planned expansion
to a total of 30 FAWN sites. Construction of the FAWN tower is planned
for the Fall, 2001.
