An 11 Mhz wireless link has been installed from the University campus to the department’s Dixie County Radio Observatory near Old Town via the Rosemary Hill optical Observatory (RHO) with an added relay link atop a forestry lookout tower in the town of Usher. The campus end of the link is a small dish antenna mounted on top of the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, about 28 meters above the ground. Pairs of antennas located on an 28 meter tower at RHO and the 30 meter high forestry tower relay the signal to a 26 meter tower at the radio observatory. The link has proven highly reliable, even in foggy or rainy weather. At RHO the connection from the Aironet BR500 Wireless Bridges to the dome housing the 46 cm telescope is made via optical fiber to minimize the possibility of lightning damage to the telescope and its support electronics.
